1. Directed Evolution of Glutathione Transferases with Altered Substrate Selectivity Profiles : A Laboratory Evolution Study Shedding Light on the Multidimensional Nature of Epistasis
Sammanfattning : Directed evolution is generally regarded as a useful approach in protein engineering. By subjecting members of a mutant library to the power of Darwinian evolution, desired protein properties are obtained. Numerous reports have appeared in the literature showing the success of tailoring proteins for various applications by this method. LÄS MER
2. Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services
Sammanfattning : Modern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can efficiently be implemented. 3. Naturmöten i pedagogiska verksamheter
Sammanfattning : The general public´s everyday encounters with nature have radically changed during the 20th century in industrial countries. Our relation towards nature in relation to environmental challenges is an important educational question, and this thesis investigates encounters with nature in educational practice. LÄS MER
4. On the importance of farmland as stopover habitat for migrating birds
Sammanfattning : Agricultural intensification has led to dramatic population declines among many farmland bird species. Negative effects of intensive farming in terms of decreased local habitat quality or structural simplification of farmland landscapes have reduced both reproductive outcome and winter survival of many species. 5. Bee foraging and pollination : Consequences of spatial and temporal variation in flower resources
Sammanfattning : Wild bees foraging in contemporary agricultural landscapes are, because of agricultural intensification, faced with the challenges of reduced flower-rich habitats, as well as a changed spatio-temporal distribution of flower resources. As a result of this and other stressors such as pesticide exposure, widespread declines of bees have been reported. LÄS MER
