  1. 1. Age and Constraints on Language Learning : First Language Retention and Second Language Acquisition in International Adoptees

    Författare :Gunnar Norrman; Emanuel Bylund Spångberg; Guillaume Thierry; Janet Werker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bilingualism; critical period; electroencephalography; event-related potentials; first language retention; international adoption; phonology; second language acquisition; Bilingualism; tvåspråkighet;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the influence of age of acquisition on the long-term second language development of international adoptees. Because age of acquisition typically coincides with the onset of bilingualism, the study of maturational age effects in second language acquisition has been empirically and conceptually entangled with changes in language input and use. Sammanfattning : The present dissertation on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) addressed several questions. First, the behavioral symptoms of speaking and mute individuals with ASD were compared on the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), a commonly used diagnostic instrument. In addition, questions about the construction of the ABC were investigated. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The Effects of Age of Onset on VOT in L2 Aquisition and L1 Attrition : A Study of the Speech Production and Perception of Advanced Spanish-Swedish Bilinguals

    Författare :Katrin Stölten; Niclas Abrahamsson; Ulla Sundberg; Kirk Sullivan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; second language acquisition; first language attrition; maturational constraints; critical period; voice onset time; stop production; categorical perception; activation threshold hypothesis; L1 use; highly proficient L2 learners; L1 Spanish; L2 Swedish; Bilingualism; tvåspråkighet;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the role of age in second language (L2) acquisition and first language (L1) attrition. The focus is on Voice Onset Time (VOT) in the production and categorical perception of word-initial L1 and L2 stops in highly advanced L1 Spanish learners of L2 Swedish. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Acquiring L2 Syllable Margins : Studies on the simplification of onsets and codas in interlanguage phonology

    Författare :Niclas Abrahamsson; Björn Hammarberg; Roy Major; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Bilingualism; Tvåspråkighet; tvåspråkighetsforskning; Bilingualism;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with developmental, universal, grammatical, and functional factors involved in the acquisition of L2 syllable structure. More specifically, using speech data from Spanish and Chinese learners of Swedish, the thesis examines the production and development of syllable onsets and codas—that is, syllable margins. LÄS MER
