Progress in the development and application of forest policies and programs, coupled with increasing trends to end damaging practices associated with swidden cultivation have created opportunities to restore forests. 24. Fertile grounds? : Collective strategies and the political ecology of soil management in Uganda
Sammanfattning : Proceeding from land degradation and soil fertility decline in sub-Saharan African smallholder agriculture and drawing on empirical research with smallholder farmers in Tororo district in south-eastern Uganda (2010-2012), this thesis identifies local collective strategies in response to changing livelihood conditions. In an attempt to co-produce knowledge with a transformative potential, the thesis also illustrates how action research can be employed to envision, implement and evaluate a locally anchored practice to improve soil fertility, namely the use of human urine as a crop fertilizer. Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis has been: to study the dynamics of soil organic-matter, with regard to nitrogen in a traditional lowland-rice agricultural system; to consider options for and nitrogen cycling of biofertilizers, especially the green-manure legume Sesbania sesban; to discuss fertilizer sources and management constraints as parts of a sustainable agricultural development; and to discnss the methodological problems of controlled experiments vs. investigations in farmer's fields.
