  1. 21. Niche differentiation of ammonia oxidizing bacteria and archaea in managed soils

    Författare :Ella Wessén; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Soils offer humanity a multitude of ecosystem services, including production of food and clean drinking water, and many such services are driven by soil microbial communities. However, human activities are constantly affecting soil ecosystems through altered land use or various management strategies, and thereby influence microbial communities and their functions. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Nutrient Transfer in Aquaponic Systems – Optimizing microbial processes for greater circularity and economic viability

    Författare :Victor P. Lobanov; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aquaculture; Aquaponics; Controlled environment agriculture; Waste revalorization; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The trend towards sustainable process design in modern industries combines the goal of improving process efficiency with a conscientious shift towards resource conservation. Aquaponics, a system that involves co-cultivating fish and plants, is a waste-conscious food production system. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Forest restoration on degraded lands in Laos

    Författare :Sovu; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Deforestation and land-use change have been, and still are, major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services in the tropics, and forest areas are being lost at high rates in many countries in Southeast Asia, including Laos. Progress in the development and application of forest policies and programs, coupled with increasing trends to end damaging practices associated with swidden cultivation have created opportunities to restore forests. 4. 24. Fertile grounds? : Collective strategies and the political ecology of soil management in Uganda

    Författare :Elina Andersson; LUCSUS; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; political ecology; land degradation; soil fertility; smallholder farmers; collective action; gender; action research; Uganda;

    Sammanfattning : Proceeding from land degradation and soil fertility decline in sub-Saharan African smallholder agriculture and drawing on empirical research with smallholder farmers in Tororo district in south-eastern Uganda (2010-2012), this thesis identifies local collective strategies in response to changing livelihood conditions. In an attempt to co-produce knowledge with a transformative potential, the thesis also illustrates how action research can be employed to envision, implement and evaluate a locally anchored practice to improve soil fertility, namely the use of human urine as a crop fertilizer. 5. 25. Traditional lowland rice agriculture in Sri Lanka : Nitrogen cycling and options for biofertilizers

    Författare :Ola Palm; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis has been: to study the dynamics of soil organic-matter, with regard to nitrogen in a traditional lowland-rice agricultural system; to consider options for and nitrogen cycling of biofertilizers, especially the green-manure legume Sesbania sesban; to discuss fertilizer sources and management constraints as parts of a sustainable agricultural development; and to discnss the methodological problems of controlled experiments vs. investigations in farmer's fields.
