1. Extended-Spectrum ß-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae : Antibiotic consumption, Detection and Resistance Epidemiology
Sammanfattning : ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae are emerging worldwide and they are frequently multi-drug resistant, thus limiting treatment options for infections caused by these pathogens. The overall aim of the thesis was to investigate ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in a Swedish county. 2. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacteriaceae : epidemiology and dynamics of fecal carriage
Sammanfattning : ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae (EPE) has become a major cause of community acquired urinary tract infection (UTI), and fecal carriage of EPE is emerging worldwide. The aims of this thesis were to study the molecular epidemiology of ESBL-enzymes in Stockholm (I) to evaluate treatment alternatives to the carbapenems for EPE (I-III), and to study the duration of fecal carriage and identify factors associated with prolonged carriage (IV). 3. Antibiotic resistance gone wild : A One Health perspective on carriage, selection and transmission of Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporinase- and Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae
Sammanfattning : Antibiotics have saved millions of lives since they came into clinical use during the Second World War in the 1940s. Today, our effective use of antibiotics is under great threat due to emerging antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This thesis addresses the problems of antibiotic resistance from a ”One Health” perspective. LÄS MER
4. Escherichia coli flora and diarrhea in Nicaraguan children
Sammanfattning : A combination of a phenotyping method (PhP typing) for the identification of clonal groups, and a genotyping method (PCR) for the identification of virulent strains of E. coli were used in order to obtain insight into diarrheal disease morbidity and epidemiology of diarrheagenic E. coli strains in children in León, Nicaragua. 5. A world inside : Gastrointestinal microbiota in healthy Swedish children at day care centers and aspects on antibiotic resistance, enteric pathogens and transmission
Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to human health and is defined by the World Health Organization as a crisis that must be managed with the utmost urgency. Antibiotic resistant bacteria increase both mortality and morbidity and have a great impact on the global economy. LÄS MER
