1. Synthetic biology approaches for improving production of fatty acid-derived compounds in cyanobacteria
Sammanfattning : The environmental consequences associated with the use of fossil-sourced fuels and chemicals have brought with it a realization that future development must move in a more sustainable direction. Currently available biofuels or renewably produced chemical, such as bioethanol or biodiesel, are produced from microbial fermentation of sugar-rich crops or by chemical conversion of natural oils or fats. 2. Exploring the Interplay of Lipids and Membrane Proteins
Sammanfattning : The interplay between lipids and membrane proteins is known to affect membrane protein topology and thus have significant effect (control) on their functions. In this PhD thesis, the influence of lipids on the membrane protein function was studied using three different membrane protein models. LÄS MER
3. Structural Studies of Echinococcus granulosus Fatty-acid-binding Protein 1 and Human Semicarbazide-sensitive Amine Oxidase
Sammanfattning : The parasite Echinococcus granulosus causes hydatid disease, a major zoonosis. A fatty-acid-binding protein, EgFABP1, is important for the parasite, as it must acquire almost all its lipids from its environment or the host. The structure of EgFABP1 has been solved and refined to 1.6 Å resolution. LÄS MER
4. Structural Studies of a Xyloglucan Endotransglycosylase from Populus tremula x tremuloides and Three Conserved Hypothetical Proteins from Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the structural studies of four different proteins from two organisms. Xyloglucan endotransglycosylases, XETs, are involved in plant cell wall expansion and remodeling by splitting and reconnecting xyloglucan-cellulose crosslinks. The first crystal structure of a XET enzyme has been determined to 1.8 Å. LÄS MER
5. Fatty acid transport proteins : candidate genes for the insulin resistance syndrome
Sammanfattning : The insulin resistance syndrome is characterised by insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension, and a typical dyslipidaemia, predisposing to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Metabolic disturbances of the insulin resistance syndrome include dysregulation of fatty acid (FA) homeostasis, for which adipose tissue serves a critical function. LÄS MER
