  1. 1. Bioassay Development for Identification of Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitors of Natural Origin

    Författare :Therese Ringbom; Angelika Vollmar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; farmakognosi;

    Sammanfattning : To examine cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitory effects of natural compounds and structurally related compounds, a radiochemical assay for measuring inhibition of COX-2 and COX-1 catalysed prostaglandin biosynthesis was optimised. That process resulted in the development of a reliable assay for finding COX-2 inhibitors in plants, and for investigating plant constituents pertaining to the inhibition of COX-2 and COX-1. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Exploring evolutionary and chemical space using chemoinformatic tools and traditional methods in pharmacognosy

    Författare :Astrid Henz Ryen; Anders Backlund; Thierry Kogej; Fernando B. Da Costa; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; angiosperm chemistry; physicochemical properties of plant specialized metabolites; chemical diversity; chemical space; sesquiterpene lactones; scaffold diversity; molecular framework; cluster analysis; ECFP6; Lindera benzoin; sesquiterpenes; anti-inflammatory; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Sammanfattning : The number of new drugs coming to the market is declining while interest in lead discovery from natural resources is seeing a revival. Although methods for isolation and identification of natural products have advanced tremendously, methods for selection of potential leads have fallen behind. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Sex, Molecules, and Gene control : Ecophysiological and evolutionary aspects of key sponge species from Antarctic shallow waters and the deep sea

    Författare :Vasiliki Koutsouveli; Paco Cárdenas; Anders Backlund; Ana Riesgo; Cassandra G. Extavour; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Porifera; Demospongiae; Geodia spp.; Phakellia ventilabrum; reproduction; gametogenesis; Antarctica; deep sea; sponge grounds; histology; molecular machinery; electron microscopy; RNA-seq; proteomics; lipidomics; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Sammanfattning : Very little is known about the ecophysiological aspects of Porifera (sponges) from Antarctica and North Atlantic, even though they are keystone components of these habitats. Being the earliest diverging metazoan lineage, sponges also play a fundamental role in our understanding of animal evolution. LÄS MER

  4. 4. LL-37-derived cyclic antimicrobial drug leads : Design, synthesis, activity and different ways of creating them

    Författare :Taj Muhammad; Ulf Göransson; Sunithi Gunasekera; Adam A. Strömstedt; Wang Guangshun; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :antimicrobial peptide; host defense; antimicrobial; LL-37; KR-12; peptide cyclisation; peptide dimerisation; croos-linking; cyanobactin-macrocyclase; PatGmac; butelase 1; enzymatic cyclisation; immobilisation; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Sammanfattning : In an era where last-line antibiotics are failing, one of the powerful approaches to develop novel therapeutic agents is to turn back to nature in order to identify possible drug candidates. Among the potential candidates, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have garnered much attention as an antimicrobial. LÄS MER

  5. 5. ChemGPS-NP and the Exploration of Biologically Relevant Chemical Space

    Författare :Josefin Rosén; Anders Backlund; Johan Gottfries; Robert Verpoorte; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; farmakognosi;

    Sammanfattning : Chemical space is basically infinite, and comprises all molecules that could possibly exist. Intelligent ways to efficiently navigate through chemical space and to select promising compounds in drug discovery are important tasks, and the focus of this thesis. In this work a new model for chemical space navigation, ChemGPS-NP, was developed. LÄS MER
