1. Microbial risk assessment and its implications for risk management in urban water systems
Sammanfattning : Infectious disease can be transmitted via various environmental pathways, many of which are incorporated into our water and wastewater systems. Quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) can be a valuable tool in identifying hazard exposure pathways and estimating their associated health impacts. LÄS MER
2. Optimisation of diagnostic PCR a study of PCR inhibitors in blood and sample pretreatment
Sammanfattning : PCR is widely employed as a rapid, sensitive and specific molecular diagnostic technique in clinical diagnosis, environmental investigations and for monitoring biotechnical processes. However, the full potential of diagnostic PCR is limited, in part, by the presence of PCR-inhibitory substances in biological samples. LÄS MER
3. PCR-based detection of microorganisms in complex biological samples
Sammanfattning : The detection of microorganisms by PCR can be divided into four steps: (1) sample collection, (2) sample preparation, (3) DNA amplification and (4) detection of PCR products. The major problem in developing PCR-based detection methods is the sample preparation step. LÄS MER
4. Lactobacillus reuteri in health and disease
Sammanfattning : People have exploited fermentation by lactobacilli for centuries as a means of preparing and preserving foods. Several different bacterial species are today used as probiotic bacteria in different products both for human and animal applications. LÄS MER
5. Treatment technologies for human faeces and urine
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines simple, cheap, environmentally friendly and resource efficient technologies for the treatment of source-separated human faeces and urine to enable safe recycling of their plant nutrients for plant production in developing countries. Composting of faeces-to-food waste (F:FW) in wet weight mix ratios of 1:0, 3:1 and 1:1 was studied in 78 L reactors insulated by 25 mm styrofoam; and of F:FW in wet volume/weight ratios of 1:0, 1:1 and 1:3 in 216 L reactors insulated by 75 mm styrofoam.
