  1. 1. Laminins and alpha11 integrin in the human eye : importance in development and disease

    Författare :Berit Byström; Fatima Pedrosa Domellöf; Ulf Stenevi; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; basement membranes; extracellular matrix; laminin; integrin; cornea; development; keratoconus; wound healing; remodeling; immunohistochemistry; Ophtalmiatrics; Oftalmiatrik;

    Sammanfattning : The extracellular matrix (ECM) offers a protective shelter for cells and provides signaling paths important for cell to cell communication. ECM consists of basement membranes (BM) and interstitial matrix. BMs provide mechanical support for parenchymal cells, influence cell proliferation, survival, migration and differentiation. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Spinal cord grafts : interaction with cografts and effects of trophic factors

    Författare :Katarzyna Trok; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :cord injury; spinal cord transplants; regeneration; GDNF; neurotrophins; CNTF; 5HT; immunohistochemistryKatarzyna Trok; 1996ISBN 91-6;

    Sammanfattning : Spinal cord injury is common in the modern society, often afflicts young individuals, and often has devastating consequences. The present work studies possibilities to obtain better conditions for regeneration of the transected spinal cord in rats, conditions under which spinal cord grafts are able to establish structural and functional connections with "natural" targets, and effects of a series of neurotrophic factors on spinal cord graft survival and growth. 3. 3. In vivo regulation of pancreatic beta cell function

    Författare :Pim Pieter van Krieken; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Pancreatic beta cells within the islets of Langerhans contribute to the regulation of glucose homeostasis by secretion of insulin, a hormone that stimulates the uptake of glucose by liver, muscle and fat tissue. In response to variations in insulin demand, the beta cell population can adapt by (1) changing the total beta cell mass, and (2) modulating the functional capacity of individual beta cells. LÄS MER
