  1. 6. Bioactivity of Medicinal Bolivian Andean plants. Effects on cell proliferation and related processes

    Författare :Gloria Rodrigo; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bolivian medicinal plants; colon cancer; cell proliferation; DNA synthesis; apoptosis; caspase-3; sesquiterpene; curcuphenol; damsin; coronopilin;

    Sammanfattning : Colon cancer is common in both developed and developing countries, and is responsible for at least 600,000 deaths globally every year. It is therefore the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality. Extensive studies are being conducted worldwide to find more effective drugs that can be used in cancer treatment. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Extraction of polymeric rapeseed straw hemicelluloses for renewable films

    Författare :Antonia Svärd; Ulrica Edlund; Elisabet Sjöholm; Emma Strömberg; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; rapeseed straw canola straw; hemicellulose; xylan; mannan; extraction; characterization; severity factor; hemicellulose film; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Polymeric hemicelluloses with high molecular weight were extracted from rapeseed straw with a straight forward hydrothermal extraction method, evaluated and refined by statistical factorial screening design and ‘severity factor’ analysis. The influence of the extraction conditions, time, temperature and pH of the extraction liquid, on the composition, molecular weight, yield and properties was unveiled. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Processing of berries – Effects on functionality, stability and bioactivity of anthocyanins

    Författare :Gabriel Barbosa; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; berries; powder; hot air and microwave drying; osmotic dehydration; press cake; edible coating; anthocyanins; gastrointestinal in vitro digestion; polyphenols; pulsed electric field; oxidative stress; yeast;

    Sammanfattning : Berries are rich natural sources of anthocyanins, water-soluble pigments in plants that have been linked to beneficial effects against chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. However, anthocyanins as well as other polyphenolic compounds are often sensitive to degradation during processing, storage and digestion. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Seaweed as a sustainable source of food protein: maximizing seaweed protein content, protein recovery, and nutritional quality

    Författare :João Pedro Trigo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; protein isolation; intestinal permeability; detergent; thermal water treatment; protein shift; wastewater; elemental compositional; macroalgae; gastrointestinal digestion; cultivation;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on utilizing seaweed, such as Saccharina latissima and Ulva fenestrata , as sustainable food protein sources to complement terrestrial protein currently limited by land and water supply. While seaweed holds promise, its protein content is lower than pulses and antinutrients reduce protein nutritional quality. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Nutri-medicinal plants used in the management of HIV/AIDS opportunistic infections in western Uganda : documentation, phytochemistry and bioactivity evaluation

    Författare :Savina Asiimwe; Anna Karin Borg Karlsson; Jasper Ogwal-Okeng; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Ethnobotanical study; Medicinal plants; HIV; AIDS; opportunistic infections; bacteria; fungi; GC-MS; phytochemistry; SPME; antioxidant; histopathology; biochemistry; hematology; western Uganda.; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : As a result of the AIDS epidemic, many people are immunocompromised and opportunistic infections are common. Medicinal plants constitute one of the fundaments of HIV treatment and are commonly used in management of HIV–related ailments, and also to counteract the side effects of antiretroviral therapy.
