    Sammanfattning : Biomarkers for organ damage and/or dysfuntion are used in almost all areas of medicine. The brain has eluded this technological development for some time. Recently, the S100B protein has been shown to be a promising marker of brain damage. However, before S100S can reach clinical reality, several problems must be solved. LÄS MER

  2. 2. S100B and Cardiac Surgery

    Författare :Henrik Bjursten; Thoraxkirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; S100-B; S100B; S100beta; brain damage; cardiac surgery; CABG; renal function; autotransfusion; Cardiovascular system; serum marker; Kardiovaskulära systemet;

    Sammanfattning : The brain-derived protein S100B is a 21 Kda dimerand have been used as a serum marker for brain damage of different etiology. The feasability of protein S100B as serum marker for brain damage after cardiac surgery was studied in this thesis. One unexpected finding was made, which changed the basis for interpration of S100B levels. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Flux of cholesterol, oxysterols and plant sterols across the blood-brain barrier and metabolic consequences

    Författare :Ahmed Saeed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Brain is the cholesterol-richest organ and contains one fourth of the total body cholesterol. The majority of brain cholesterol is present in myelin that forms myelin sheathes around neuronal axons. This large pool of cholesterol present in brain is separated from body cholesterol by the blood brain barrier (BBB). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Deciphering the role of 27-hydroxycholesterol in neurodegeneration

    Författare :Muhammad Al Mustafa Ismail; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Cholesterol is constantly attributed to neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This is due to the association of high blood cholesterol and the consequences of cholesterol metabolism in these conditions. LÄS MER
