  1. 1. Reasons for Language : Language and Analogical Reasoning Ability in Children with Cochlear Implants and Children with Typical Hearing

    Författare :Michaela Socher; Björn Lyxell; Malin Wass; Rachel J. Ellis; Åsa Wengelin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; cochlear implants; analogical reasoning; cognitive training; expressive language; pragmatic language ability;

    Sammanfattning : The usage-based model of language acquisition assumes that language is learned by its usage. General cognitive processes, especially analogical reasoning ability, are assumed to lead to the understanding of words and grammatical structures. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Individuals with autism spectrum disorders : teaching, language, and screening

    Författare :Fredrika Miranda-Linné; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; Autism; autism spectrum disorders; Autism Behavior Checklist; language; test construction; factor analysis; teaching; discrete-trial; incidental teaching; generalization; spontaneous usage; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi; Clinical Physiology; klinisk fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The present dissertation on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) addressed several questions. First, the behavioral symptoms of speaking and mute individuals with ASD were compared on the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), a commonly used diagnostic instrument. In addition, questions about the construction of the ABC were investigated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Interaction and Language Assessment in Aphasia and Dementia : A Comparative Perspective

    Författare :Karin Myrberg; Christina Samuelsson; Lars-Christer Hydén; Heidi Hamilton; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Aphasia; Dementia; Assessment; Testing; Interaction; Language; Cognition;

    Sammanfattning : Language problems in dementia resemble the symptoms of aphasia in many respects. A growing body of research discusses the cognitive deficits associated with aphasia. Despite common denominators, very little is written with a comparative perspective on the two clinical groups. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Translation as Linear Transduction : Models and Algorithms for Efficient Learning in Statistical Machine Translation

    Författare :Markus Saers; Joakim Nivre; Anna Sågvall Hein; Dekai Wu; Kevin Knight; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; linear transduction; linear transduction grammar; inversion transduction; zipper finite-state automaton; zipper finite-state transducer; formal language theory; formal transduction theory; translation; automatic translation; machine translation; statistical machine translation; Computational linguistics; Datorlingvistik; Language technology; Språkteknologi; Computational Linguistics; Datorlingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : Automatic translation has seen tremendous progress in recent years, mainly thanks to statistical methods applied to large parallel corpora. Transductions represent a principled approach to modeling translation, but existing transduction classes are either not expressive enough to capture structural regularities between natural languages or too complex to support efficient statistical induction on a large scale. 5. 5. Expressivity and Complexity of the Grammatical Framework

    Författare :Peter Ljunglöf; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Grammatical Framework; generalized context-free grammar; multiple context-free grammar; context-free rewriting systems; type theory; expressive power; abstract syntax; linearization; parsing; context-free rewriting systems;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the expressive power and parsing complexity of the Grammatical Framework (GF), a formalism originally designed for displaying formal propositions and proofs in natural language. This is done by relating GF with two more well-known grammar formalisms; Generalized Context-Free Grammar (GCFG), best seen as a framework for describing various grammar formalisms; and Parallel Multiple Context-Free Grammar (PMCFG), an instance of GCFG.
