  1. 1. Top-down and bottom-up effects in a Fennoscandian tundra community

    Författare :Doris Grellmann; Lars Ericson; Lauri Oksanen; Richard Inouye; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; consumer-resource interactions; exclosures; food web dynamics; grey-sided voles; lemmings; NPK-fertilization; plant defences; reindeer; soil microbes; vertebrate grazing;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis was to investigate the effects of mammalian grazers, such as microtine rodents and reindeer, (top-down effects) and nutrient availability (bottom- up effects) on the plant community of a tundra heath.I conducted a large-scale fertilization experiment and studied the impact of grazers using exclosures. 2. 2. Herbivory and plant community structure in a subarctic altitudinal gradient

    Författare :Jon Moen; Nancy Huntly; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; arctic and alpine vegetation; competition; exclosures; lemmings; plant defences; plant-plant interactions; Ranunculus glacialis; snow-bed; structuring factors; tall herb meadow; vertebrate grazing; voles;

    Sammanfattning : The object of this thesis was to study plant community structure, especially in relation to vertebrate herbivory, in an altitudinal gradient in the Fennoscandian mountain chain.A sowing experiment in a high alpine Ranunculus glacialis population showed that seeds germinated better in cleared microsites than under established individuals. 3. 3. Circumpolar impacts of herbivores on Arctic tundra vegetation

    Författare :Elin Lindén; Johan Olofsson; Maja K. Sundqvist; Mariska te Beest; Elisabeth S. Bakker; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; herbivores; grazing; Arctic; circumpolar; tundra; vegetation; plant defence; secondary metabolites; shrub birch; exclosures; vegetation; species diversity; biology; biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Arctic tundra vegetation provides many ecological services that have implications for the global climate. However, the tundra biome is currently changing in response to increasing temperatures. Herbivores may mitigate some of these responses to warming through their impact on Arctic vegetation. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Predation and shorebirds: predation management, habitat effects and public opinions

    Författare :Daniel Isaksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Conservation; waders; predation; coastal pastures; redshank; lapwing; attitudes; human dimensions;

    Sammanfattning : Many shorebird populations are rapidly declining and a high nest predation rate is one of the threats facing these populations. Thus, factors that affect predation and how to manage it in an effective way are receiving increased attention. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and vegetation in the Fennoscandian tundra

    Författare :Jonas Dahlgren; Lauri Oksanen; Johan Olofsson; John Terborgh; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gray-sided voles; tundra vegetation; trophic cascades; plant-herbivore interactions; bilberry; plant communities; herbivory; plant resistance; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : I have, in this thesis, studied the interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and tundra vegetation, on islands in, and mainland sites close to the lake Iešjávri, in northern Norway. As isolated islands are virtually free of predation, I have been able to compare plant-herbivore interactions in the presence and absence of predators. LÄS MER
