11. On the neuropeptide mRNA expression following neuropsychopharmacological treatments
Sammanfattning : In addition to classical neurotransmitters, an increasing number of neuropeptides have been found in the brain. Although neuropeptides may play important roles especially in higher brain functions such as emotion, mood, memory, and learning, most focus has been directed upon classical neurotransmitters and their receptors. 12. Aspects of Induced Hypothermia following Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation : Cerebral and Cardiovascular Effects
Sammanfattning : Hypothermia treatment with cooling to a body temperature of 32-34°C has been shown to be an effective way of improving neurological outcome and survival in unconscious patients successfully resuscitated after cardiac arrest (CA). The method is used clinically but there are still many questions on the biological mechanisms and on how the treatment is best performed. LÄS MER
13. Anti-epileptic and neuroprotective mechanisms by Topiramate and Levetiracetam evaluated in primary cultures
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate plausible intracellular mechanisms of action for antiepileptic drugs, Topiramate (TPM) and Levetiracetam (LEV), and to investigate if TPM possesses neuroprotective properties. The thesis is based on results from calcium imaging, immunohistochemical stainings, viability tests, and Western blot using primary cortical or hippocampal cultures, or hippocampal brain slices. 14. Role of cytokines in experimental neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders
Sammanfattning : Altered expression of cytokines in response to body injury has diverse actions that can exacerbate, mediate, reduce or inhibit neuronal and myelin damage as well as influence the disease development in a variety of nervous system disorders, such as Alzheimer s disease (AD), multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). In these studies, we attempted to explore the possible roles of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-18 in experimental neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders. LÄS MER
15. Calpain-Mediated Apoptosis in Motor Neurons of Adult Mouse Spinal Cord Slices
Sammanfattning : Motor neuron degeneration is a critical phenomenon during spinal cord injuries and some neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms by which cell death is induced in these neurons are poorly understood. LÄS MER
