  1. 1. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: exacerbations and mortality : Prognostic value of biomarkers and comorbidities

    Författare :Jens Ellingsen; Andrei Malinovschi; Christer Janson; Arnulf Langhammer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; COPD; exacerbations; mortality; biomarkers; comorbidity; Lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. COPD is associated with systemic inflammation, and comorbidities are common. A characteristic feature is acute exacerbations (AECOPDs), i.e. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Background: Risk factors for poor health related quality of life (HRQL), mortality and exacerbations in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) need to be explored.Objectives: To examine associations of comorbidity and Body Mass Index (BMI) with HRQL using the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ); to examine the prognostic qualities of the multidimensional instrument DOSE index; to examine the association of health status estimated by the CCQ with mortality; and to examine management of exacerbations and subsequent exacerbation risk. Sammanfattning : In this thesis, different aspects of the treatment and care of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been studied.In a study of 50 patients seeking medical care for an acute exacerbation of asthma or COPD, we studied inflammatory markers in blood, sputum and urine. Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to modify and evaluate effects, as well as todescribe experiences of a nurse-led multidisciplinary programme of pulmonaryrehabilitation in primary health care for patients with chronicobstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and their next of kin.Interviews were performed with 12 COPD nurses about their experiencesof patient education (I). 5. 5. Fatigue and Peripheral Muscle Dysfunction: Studies on Vitamin D Status, Muscle Metabolism and Systemic Inflammation in Patients with COPD : Aspects of COPD severity beyond FEV1 and exacerbations

    Författare :Magnus Kentson; Lennart Persson; Jan-Erik Karlsson; Fredrik Nyström; Arne Egesten; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : BackgroundThe severity of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is usually described in terms of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and number of exacerbations. However, COPD is a complex disease with different ways of expression, involving pulmonary symptoms, extra pulmonal manifestations and comorbidities, which altogether affect the patient by contributing to reduced functional capacity, increased shortness of breath, reduced health-related quality of life and increased mortality.
