  1. 1. Climate change time machine : Adaptation to 30 years of warming in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Friederike Ermold; Anssi Laurila; Jukka Jokela; Kerstin Johannesson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; thermal adaptation; evolution; Baltic Sea; Biotest Basin; ecological interactions; biological invasions; phenotypic plasticity; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Earth mean surface temperature has increased by 1 °C since the industrial revolution, and this has already had considerable effects on animal and plant species. Ecological responses to the warming climate – often facilitated via phenotypic plasticity – are ubiquitous. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Evolutionary innovation : Early industrial uses of genetic engineering

    Författare :Maureen McKelvey; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Biotechnology industry; Economics of innovation; Evolutionary Economics; Genentech; human growth hormone; Kabi; technological innovation; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Sammanfattning : Based on an analysis of biological and economic theories of evol~tion, this dissertation first specifies evolutionary innovation and then uses it toanalyze early industrial uses of genetic engineering. Innovation refers totechnological innovation processes, i.e. series of innovative activitiesresulting in technical change. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Drivers of evolutionary change in Podospora anserina

    Författare :Sandra Lorena Ament-Velásquez; Hanna Johannesson; Bengt Olle Bengtsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Podospora; Meiotic drive; Spore killing; vegetative incompatibility; heterokaryon incompatibility; allorecognition; speciation; Transposable elements; selfish genetic elements; fungi; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Genomic diversity is shaped by a myriad of forces acting in different directions. Some genes work in concert with the interests of the organism, often shaped by natural selection, while others follow their own interests. The latter genes are considered “selfish”, behaving either neutrally to the host, or causing it harm. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Bank-Industry Networks and Economic Evolution : An Institutional-Evolutionary Approach

    Författare :Thomas Marmefelt; Jönköping University; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Schumpeterian bank-entrepreneur interaction; Bank-industry networks; Innovation; Economic evolution; Endogenous growth; Entropy; Financial institutions; Governance; Conventions; Institutional change; Network commitment; Spontaneous order; Collective action; Evolutionary game theory; Economic history;

    Sammanfattning : The links between institutions and economic evolution, especially between financial institutions and industrial innovation, are poorly understood. Having Schumpeter´s theory of economic evolution as starting point, this study gives an outline of an institutional-evolutionary theory of institutional change, innovation, and financial systems, based on learning-by-financing within bank-industry networks. 5. 5. Plant-Herbivore Interactions and Evolutionary Potential of Natural Arabidopsis lyrata Populations

    Författare :Adriana Puentes; Jon Ågren; Jenny Hagenblad; Roosa Leimu Brown; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant defenses; leaf herbivory; floral herbivory; ontogeny; G-matrix; trade-offs; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined field, greenhouse and common-garden experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions and the genetic architecture of fitness-related traits in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. More specifically, I examined (1) whether damage to leaves and inflorescences affects plant fitness non-additively, (2) whether trichome production is associated with a cost in terms of reduced tolerance to leaf and inflorescence damage, (3) whether young plant resistance to a specialist insect herbivore varies among populations, and (4) whether the evolution of flowering time, floral display and rosette size is constrained by lack of genetic variation or by genetic correlations among traits.
