21. Non-genetic processes in development and heredity
Sammanfattning : There is a swiftly increasing amount of empirical evidence that non-genetic factors, such as DNA methylation and small RNAs, play an important role not only in development but also in heredity and, therefore, evolutionary dynamics. One of the most interesting aspects of non-genetic processes is their responsiveness to environmental conditions, which has been shown to affect not only the phenotype and fitness of the individuals directly exposed to the stimulus, but also their offspring even when the stimulus is no longer present, indicating that the transmission of non-genetic factors across generations might work analogously to immunization against recurring conditions. 22. Genome Evolution of Neurospora tetrasperma
Sammanfattning : In this thesis work, I have used a comparative genomics approach to study a fungal model organism, Neurospora tetrasperma. My specific focus has been on genomic introgression, intron evolution, chromosomal structural rearrangements and codon usage. LÄS MER
23. Evolution of symbiotic lineages and the origin of new traits
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the genomic study of symbionts of two different groups of hymenopterans: bees and ants. Both groups of insects have major ecological impact, and investigating their microbiomes increases our understanding of their health, diversity and evolution. LÄS MER
24. On the Evolution of the Avian Transcriptome
Sammanfattning : Change in gene expression is a powerful tool for evolution, because seemingly small expression changes can contribute important steps towards adaptation without necessarily affecting the whole organism. There is still much to learn about how gene expression evolves on genome- and population-wide levels, especially in non-model organisms. LÄS MER
25. Translational research of the quaking gene : Focusing on the conjunction between development and disease
Sammanfattning : Quaking (QKI) is an RNA binding protein involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Originally identified as the cause of hypomyelination in a mouse mutant, it has since been consistently implicated in a wide range of neurological diseases. LÄS MER
