1. On Reduction of Production Disturbances in Manufacturing Systems Based on Discrete-Event Simulation
Sammanfattning : Improved efficiency in manufacturing systems to achieve increased output and thus reduced production disturbances is a vital area. DES (Discrete-Event Simulation) can visualize and study the dynamic issues related to total efficiency in manufacturing systems. A methodology for production disturbance reduction is presented. 2. Towards Increased Use of Discrete-Event Simulation for Hospital Resource Planning
Sammanfattning : Health care systems in many countries are experiencing a growing demand while their resources remain limited. The discrepancy between demand and capacity creates many problems – long waiting times for treatment, overcrowding in hospital wards, high workload, etc. LÄS MER
3. Assessing Energy Use and Carbon Emissions to Support Planning of Environmentally Sustainable Earthmoving Operations
Sammanfattning : Road and infrastructure projects have significant environmental impacts due to their high energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Among it, earthmoving operations contribute disproportionately to these impacts because of their intensive use of heavy machinery. LÄS MER
4. Rapid Urbanization : An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Urban Transition in Developing Countries
Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with the challenges posed by the contemporary urban narrative in developing countries. It is premised on the notion of the urban transition, which posits that as a country develops it undergoes a transformation from a predominantly rural society to a predominantly urban one. LÄS MER
5. The palaeolimnological record of regime shifts in lakes in response to climate change
Sammanfattning : Regime shifts in lake ecosystems can occur in response to both abrupt and continuous climate change, and the imprints they leave in palaeolimnological records allow us to investigate and better understand patterns and processes governing ecological changes on geological time scales. This thesis aims at investigating palaeolimnological records of regime shifts in lakes during the Holocene to explore how lake ecosystems responded to climate changes and anthropogenic activities and to identify thresholds or tipping points that produced regime shifts.
