  1. 1. Striatal adaptations in experimental parkinsonism and L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia

    Författare :Tim Fieblinger; Basala gangliernas patofysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Striatum; Parkinson’s disease; L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia; ERK1 2; mGluR5; homeostatic plasticity; SPN; 2‑Photon microscopy;

    Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by the loss of dopamine (DA) producing neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), resulting in typical motor symptoms. DA replacement with L-DOPA is the standard therapy for PD. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Genes involved in Parkinson's disease : focus on mitochondrial and detoxifying enzymes

    Författare :Anna Anvret; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Parkinson's disease is a common progressive neurodegenerative disorder which mostly affects the elderly population, with a prevalence of more than 1.5% in the population over the age of 65 years. Clinical motor symptoms are mainly caused by degeneration of dopamine neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. LÄS MER

  3. 3. LXR and aromatase knock-out mice : animal models providing insight into human diseases

    Författare :Hyun-Jin Kim; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In our characterization of mouse strains carrying mutations in nuclear receptor and aromatase genes we have found phenotypes which resemble four human diseases: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Sjögren s syndrome (SS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The work in this thesis was designed to understand the roles of LXRalpha, LXRbeta and aromatase in development of these diseases and to investigate whether these animal models help us (1) to understand the etiology of the corresponding human diseases and (2) to develop new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of these diseases. 4. 4. On genes involved in common neurological disorders : focus on Parkinson's disease

    Författare :Caroline Ran; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease and migraine are complex neurological disorders and it is likely that a combination of genetic risk factors are involved in the etiology of both these diseases. Papers in this thesis investigate candidate genes in the search of genetic risk factors contributing to disease. LÄS MER
