  1. 1. Rheumatoid arthritis in male patients : sex hormones, bone mineral density and clinical characteristics

    Författare :Birgitta Tengstrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Rheumatoid arthritis; men; gender; testosterone; DHEAS; estrone; estradiol; LH; bone mineral density; outcome.;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this study were to investigate sex hormones in men with RA and the relation of these hormones with disease characteristics including bone mineral density, as well as to study gender differences in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Estrogens and androgens and the balance between these hormones interact with the cytokine network and modulate immunity. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Female stress incontinence and uterovaginal prolapse : collagen turnover and hormone sensitivity in urogenital tissue

    Författare :Lena Edwall; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Stress incontinence; urogenital tissue; collagen turnover markers; estradiol- 17beta; estrone; testosterone; uterovaginal prolapse; menopause;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Prevalence of both stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and uterovaginal prolapse (UP) is high and rising with age. Risk factors include multiparity, obesity, chronic obstructive lung disease and previous gynecological surgery. The underlying pathology is still unknown but may include defective connective tissue. 3. 3. Analytical method development for ultra-trace determination of human pharmaceuticals in aqueous samples. Assessing the performance of a sewage treatment plant

    Författare :Saioa Zorita; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction; Sample preparation; solid-phase extraction; membrane extraction; human pharmaceuticals; sewage treatment plant; steroid hormones;

    Sammanfattning : Research focus in environmental pollution has recently been extended from more classical environmental pollutants such as PCBs or pesticides to pharmaceuticals and steroid hormones, which are designed to be biologically active and enter the environment primarily through regular domestic use. Consequently, it is important to monitor these substances concentrations in the effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and in the environment in order to evaluate their associated risks. 4. 4. Sex steroid effects on normal breast tissue

    Författare :Gunnar Söderqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Estrogen receptor; progesterone receptor; proliferation; breast epithelialcells; mammary epithelium; sulfatase; 17 HSD; regional differences; sex steroids;

    Sammanfattning : In Sweden, it is estimated that about one million women are treated with estrogen/progestogen for contraception and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The possibility of an increased cancer risk in target organs has been vividly discussed for many years. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Endogenous hormones in the etiology of ovarian and endometrial cancers

    Författare :Annekatrin Lukanova; Eva Lundin; Pär Stattin; Rudolf Kaaks; Susan E. Hankinson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; ovarian cancer; endometrial cancer; sex-steroid hormones; sex-hormone binding globulin; insulin-like growth factor-I; insulin-like growth factor bidning proteins; C-peptide; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; epidemiologi; Epidemiology;

    Sammanfattning : The main purpose of this thesis was to examine the relationship of pre-diagnostic circulating levels of sex-steroids (androgens and estrogens), sex hormone binding globuline (SHBG), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), IGF binding proteins (BP) and C-peptide (as a marker of pancreatic insulin secretion) with risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer. Additionally, the interrelationships of body mass index (BMI), sex-steroids, IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were examined. LÄS MER
