1. Hydrolases as Catalysts for Green Chemistry and Industrial Applications - Esterase, Lipase and Phytase
Sammanfattning : The use of enzymes in industrial applications has been recognised for providing clean processes with minimal impact on the environment. This thesis presents studies on engineering of enzymes and enzyme-based processes in the light of green chemistry and environmental sustainability, and focuses on three hydrolases: esterase, lipase and phytase. 2. Feruloyl esterases - Evaluation of their potential for biotechnological applications
Sammanfattning : Owing to the current efforts to find sustainable alternatives to petrochemical based industries and technologies, enzymatic degradation and valorization of plant biomass has been attracting interest. Due to the complexity of plant biomass, an array of enzymes is required to hydrolyze it, including esterases. LÄS MER
3. On Catalytic Mechanisms for Rational Enzyme Design Strategies
Sammanfattning : Enzymes enable life by promoting chemical reactions that govern the metabolism of all living organisms. As green catalysts, they have been extensively used in industry. However, to reach their full potential, engineering is often required, which can benefit from a detailed understanding of the underlying reaction mechanism. LÄS MER
4. Enzyme substrate solvent interactions : a case study on serine hydrolases
Sammanfattning : Reaction rates and selectivities were measured for transacylation of fatty acid esters in solvents catalysed by Candida antarctica lipase B and by cutinase from Humicola insolens. With these enzymes classical water-based enzymology can be expanded to many different solvents allowing large variations in interaction energies between the enzymes, the substrates and the surrounding. 5. Rational engineering of esterases for improved amidase specificity in amide synthesis and hydrolysis
Sammanfattning : Biocatalysis is an ever evolving field that uses enzymes or microorganisms for chemical synthesis. By utilizing enzymes that generally have evolved for specific reactions under mild conditions and temperatures, biocatalysis can be a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional chemistry.
