11. Occupational and socio-economic factors in the etiology of cancer of the esophagus and gastric cardia
Sammanfattning : Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia and squamous-cell carcinoma of the esophagus have a poor prognosis. The increasing incidence and the strong male predominance of esophageal and cardia adenocarcinoma are striking, and yet unexplained, patterns that should be due to unknown environmental factors. 12. Epidemiological studies of Helicobacter pylori and its relation to cancer and precancerous lesions in the upper gastrointestinal tract
Sammanfattning : Helicobacter pylori infection is strongly associated with gastric cancer risk. The carcinogenic process is supposed to occur step by step, from a normal gastric epithelium via gastritis, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia to dysplasia. LÄS MER
13. Aspects of neoadjuvant therapy in the curative treatment of cancer in the esophagus or gastroesophageal junction
Sammanfattning : Malignant esophageal tumors are among the most severe cancers. Only about 30% of the patients are suitable for curative treatment at diagnosis. The treatment is extremely demanding and unfortunately has disappointing results. The staging of disease and the treatment for cancer of the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction need to be improved. LÄS MER
14. Gastroesophageal reflux disease - complications and prognostic aspects
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates several aspects on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and associated complications as Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. I. To clarify the natural course of GERD, a pH-metry verified cohort was re-evaluated after 20 years. The course of GERD may well be progressive. LÄS MER
15. Risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Sammanfattning : Aims: The etiology of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in the high risk areas is largely unknown and a few environmental risk factors which have been identified do not explain its oddly high incidence in esophageal cancer belt. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the association of opium/tobacco consumption, serologic gastric atrophy, gastric mucosa-associated microbiota and contact with farm animals with the risk of ESCC.
