16. Defence capabilities of human intestinal epithelial cells
Sammanfattning : The epithelial cells lining the intestinal mucosa separate the underlying tissue from components of the intestinal lumen. Innate immunity mediated by intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) provides rapid protective functions against microorganisms. Innate immunity also participates in orchestrating adaptive immunity. 17. The oesophageal mucosa in reflux disease - endoscopic appearance and tissue structure
Sammanfattning : Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is very common in especially the western world. The cardinal symptoms are heartburn or regurgitations and are caused by the reflux of noxious compounds from the stomach/duodenum to the oesophagus. LÄS MER
18. Expression and regulation of CCL25 and its role in T cell localization to and function within the small intestine
Sammanfattning : Earlier studies have demonstrated an important role for the chemokine CCL25, and its receptor CCR9, in the generation of the small intestinal lymphocyte compartment. The work in this thesis was aimed at determining how CCL25 is regulated within the small intestinal mucosa, and what potential role it plays in T cell localization to and function within this site. 19. lntestinal microenvironment, epithelial barrier interactions and human milk oligosaccharide supplementation in irritable bowel syndrome
Sammanfattning : Alterations of the microbiota-host interactions at the mucosal border may be of importance in symptom generation in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder of gut-brain interaction. Hence, microbiota-targeted interventions may benefit some patients by beneficially modulating the intestinal microenvironment. LÄS MER
20. Intestinal permeability : a parameter of mucosal dysfunction
Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal tract has two opposing functions; to absorb nutrients and electrolytes, and to act as a barrier towards hazardous and non-nutritional substances. In the present thesis the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in animal models in vivo, in situ and in vitro. LÄS MER
