2. Building international institutions for environmental protection : The case of Baltic Sea environmental cooperation
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses upon the ambiguity in international environmental law and practice, between, the principle of sic utere tuo ut alienum non iaedas, also referred to as the solidarity principle, and the sovereignty principle. Accordingly, the international regime for environmental protection could, on the one hand, be regarded as promoting policies out of concern for the common good, but on the other hand; the sovereignty principle restricts the possibilities for such policies. 3. Need for speed : towards urban planning for rapid transitioning to sustainable personal mobility
Sammanfattning : The Paris Agreement, the recent Special Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the Sustainable Development Goals are examples of United Nation’s facilitated calls for urgent climate action and more generally for a rapid transition of society towards sustainability. Since urban personal mobility is a significant contributor to society’s current sustainability challenges, and considering current trends of population growth and urbanisation, there is a strong need to develop enhanced support for urban planning for rapid transitioning to sustainable personal mobility. 4. The Global Fashion System : On its social-ecological intertwinedness
Sammanfattning : The fashion industry contributes to shaping the state of the planet: impacts of production and consumption of textile fast-fashion are rising, and the growing number of sustainability-oriented actions have not slowed current trends. The industry’s (un)sustainability is mainly researched within two epistemic communities: fashion studies concerned with social sustainability, and circular economy focused on material biophysical and technological aspects of material cycles along the value chain. 5. Negotiating social-ecological fit through knowledge practice
Sammanfattning : Adaptive governance and management (AG and AM) have been proposed to address the “problem of fit” between ecosystems and governance systems. AG and AM are intended to reconfigure the relations between knowledge and action through, for instance, experimentation, collaboration and monitoring, to enhance social-ecological feedbacks. LÄS MER
