    Sammanfattning : The aim of this dissertation has been to investigate whether the democratization process in the Church of Sweden in the latter part of the 20th century has led to changes in the office and the role of bishops. The main issue in our investigation has been to elucidate whether a change in the bishops´ real influence on various levels of the church´s organization has taken place and if so, to examine and explain the underlaying motives and driving forces.     Sammanfattning : Is it possible to understand a society and a certain place that is long since gone? The aim of this thesis is to study and analyse a historic period and its people through the remains of their material culture, the social relations and how these were materialized in an urban setting. The main subject of the empirical study, the medieval episcopal town of Linköping, has shifted out-look, function and meaning during different periods, but always with strong ideological expressions.
