Sammanfattning : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. Sammanfattning : Epileptic seizures as well as antiepileptic drugs (AED) may interfere with the hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA) and have neuroendocrine effects. A transient increase of prolactin (PRL) and cortisol in serum after generalised tonic-clonic or complex partial seizures has been one of the most consistent findings, although absences and myoclonic seizures, as well as seizures of very short duration, do not seem to affect PRL levels. 5. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors
Sammanfattning : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE.
