6. Cerebral Injury in Perinatal Asphyxia, epidemiological, clinical, neurophysiological and neuromatabolic investigations
Sammanfattning : Perinatal asphyxia with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the most important cause of perinatal mortality and cerebral palsy (CP) in infants born at term. The aim of the thesis was to investigate epidemiology of perinatal asphyxia, and to investigate early clinical neurological symptoms after perinatal asphyxia in relation to cerebral glucose metabolism (CMRgl) measured by 18-FDG-PET, neurophysiological function, some biochemical markers, also in relation to long-term outcome. 7. Suicide mortality in the South African context : exploring the role of social status and environmental circumstances
Sammanfattning : Suicide is a serious public health problem worldwide, but is differentially distributed across social groups and regions. The goal of this thesis, focusing on the post-apartheid transitional setting of South Africa, is to advance knowledge of the relationship between individual social status (race and sex), contextual factors and suicide mortality. 8. Epidemiology of cardiovascular disease risk factors in Ethiopia : the rural-ruban gradient
Sammanfattning : BackgroundChanges in the population structure and the main causes of death result in the growing burden of chronic diseases, which characterize the epidemiological transition. The transition takes place at different paces in different parts of the world. LÄS MER
9. The Role of Zinc in Leishmaniasis and Tuberculosis
Sammanfattning : The synergistic relation between nutritional deficiency and infection may have negative effects on the immune system, making individuals more vulnerable to infection. Zinc can affect the resistance to infections by modulating cytokine release, and by acting as a cofactor of thymulin, which induces the differentiation of immature T lymphocytes. LÄS MER
10. Exploiting conjugacy in state-space models with sequential Monte Carlo
Sammanfattning : Many processes we encounter in our daily lives are dynamical systems that can be described mathematically using state-space models. Exact inference of both states and parameters in these models is, in general, intractable. LÄS MER
