11. Hydrolysis of by-products from cereal kernels for improved ethanol production
Sammanfattning : This work deals with the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic agricultural residues, by means of combined pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, to be used for ethanol production. Four agricultural by-products, i.e. LÄS MER
12. Fuel Ethanol Production from Corn Stover: Optimization of Steam Pretreatment and Improvement of Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation
Sammanfattning : Fuel ethanol, produced from biomass, could well be tomorrow's replacement for gasoline. This thesis deals with the production of fuel ethanol from corn stover using an enzymatic process consisting of the following main steps: steam pretreatment of the raw material, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation of the sugars and ethanol refining. 13. Fenton Pre-treatment of a Birch Kraft Pulp for MFC preparation
Sammanfattning : The potential to use acidic hydrogen peroxide in the presence of ferrous ions (Fenton’s reagent) as a pre-treatment when producing microfibrillar cellulose (MFC) from a fully bleached birch (Betula verucosa) kraft pulp was investigated and the properties of the produced MFC was compared to the properties of a MFC produced with enzymatic pre-treatment with a monocomponent endoglucanase (FiberCare® R). The mechanical treatment to MFC was performed in a laboratory colloid mill or in a pilot high-pressure homogeniser and the pre-treated pulps as well as the produced MFCs were chemically and morphologically characterised. 14. Biochemical conversion of biomass to biofuels : pretreatment–detoxification–hydrolysis–fermentation
Sammanfattning : The use of lignocellulosic materials to replace fossil resources for the industrial production of fuels, chemicals, and materials is increasing. The carbohydrate composition of lignocellulose (i.e. cellulose and hemicellulose) is an abundant source of sugars. LÄS MER
15. Processing Lignocellulosic Biomass into Ethanol - Implications of High Solid Loadings
Sammanfattning : Fuel ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass has the potential to provide a sustainable replacement for traditional oil-based fuels. This dissertation assesses the processing of three different lignocellulosic materials – spruce, wheat straw and giant reed – at industrially relevant solid loadings. The work is divided into two main parts. LÄS MER
