  1. 16. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification

    Författare :Niccoló Peruzzi; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; x-ray imaging; neutron imaging; μCT; synchrotron radiation; x-ray phase-contrast; nanoholotomography; x-ray elemental mapping; biomedical applications; virtual histology; biodegradable implants; Mg-alloys; enteric nervous system; peripheral neuropathy; gastroenteric dysmotility; Fysicumarkivet A:2021:Peruzzi;

    Sammanfattning : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them.The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 2. 17. Luminal Hypotonicity and Duodenal Functions : An Experimental Study in the Rat

    Författare :Liselotte Pihl; Olof Nylander; Gunnar Flemström; Mats Jodal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Physiology; luminal alkalinization; mucosal permeability; osmolality; cyclooxygenase-2; rat; duodenum; jejunum; motility; enteric nervous system; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : After drinking water, the fluid quickly leaves the stomach thereby creating a hypotonic luminal environment in the duodenum. This in turn constitutes a potential threat to the integrity of the duodenal epithelium. It therefore seems highly likely that luminal hypotonicity activates physiological mechanisms that aim to increase luminal osmolality. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Intestinal Bypass and Total Parenteral Nutrition: Changes in Gut Function and Morphology

    Författare :Mikael Ekelund; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; Surgery; Gastroenterologi; Gastro-enterology; Fysiologi; Physiology; total parenteral nutrition; supersensitivity; plasticity; intestinal bypass; interstitial cells of Cajal; goblet cells; eosinophils; adaptation; enteric nervous system;

    Sammanfattning : Abolition of enteral nutrition is sometimes required in severe illness. The primary aim of the present work has been to elucidate possible changes in intestinal morphology and motor function in absence of enteral nutrition. Total absence of enteral nutrition in an isolated intestinal segment was created by bypassing the distal ileum in a rat model. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Prevention of Postoperative Duodenal Ileus by COX-2 Inhibition Improves Duodenal Function in Anaesthetised Rats

    Författare :John Sedin; Olof Nylander; Markus Sjöblom; Lars Fändriks; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; duodenum; motility; enteric nervous system; luminal alkalinisation; CFTR; VIP; luminal Cl-; fluid secretion; solute absorption; mucosal permeability; 51Cr-EDTA; luminal osmolality; luminal hypertonicity; glucose; mannitol; orange juice; parecoxib; hexamethonium; mecamylamine; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Abdominal surgery inhibits gastrointestinal motility, a phenomenon referred to as postoperative ileus. Since the postoperative ileus disturbs duodenal physiology it is important to minimize the side effects of this condition. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Neuroimmune Interactions of Enteric Neurons and Mast Cells: Friends or Foes?

    Författare :Elin Sand; Neurogastroenterologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; enteric neurons; ischemia; VIP; mast cells; CRF;

    Sammanfattning : Psychological distress or physical strain lead to reduced blood flow in the intestine since other organs are prioritised. One aim of this thesis was to investigate how ischemia followed by reperfusion affects the large intestine and the enteric nervous system (ENS). LÄS MER
