  1. 1. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification

    Författare :Niccoló Peruzzi; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; x-ray imaging; neutron imaging; μCT; synchrotron radiation; x-ray phase-contrast; nanoholotomography; x-ray elemental mapping; biomedical applications; virtual histology; biodegradable implants; Mg-alloys; enteric nervous system; peripheral neuropathy; gastroenteric dysmotility; Fysicumarkivet A:2021:Peruzzi;

    Sammanfattning : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them.The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 2. 2. Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and enteric dysmotility : aspects on patients' health-care use, coping capacity and quality of life

    Författare :Marie Iwarzon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction; coping; delivery of health care; enteric dysmotility; health-related quality of life; manometry; nutrition; patient care team; signs and symptoms; survival;

    Sammanfattning : Aims of the thesis: To measure health care consumption before and after the introduction of a specialized day-care unit and to investigate if patients with chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP) differ from those with enteric dysmotility (ED) regarding clinical features, self-reported functional status, health-related quality of life (HRQL), and sense of coherence (SOC). Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records for 125 and 54 patients with CIP or ED (paper I-II). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Peripheral and central factors in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome

    Författare :Iris Posserud; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :irritable bowel syndrome IBS ; visceral perception; rectal perception; visceral hypersensitivity; gastrointestinal symptoms; hypervigilance; selective attention; stress; small intestinal bacterial overgrowth; rectal barostat; small bowel motility; gastrointestinal dysmotility;

    Sammanfattning : Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder characterized by abdominal pain and/or discomfort together with abnormal bowel habits. The pathophysiology is complex and incompletely understood. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Gut Feelings - From Brain to Gut and from Lumen to Gut

    Författare :Xiaowen Cheng; Neurogastroenterologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Enteric nervous system; cerebral ischemia; galectine-3; tuft cell; CGRP; CCK; GLP-1; 5HT; PYY;

    Sammanfattning : Part 1: From Brain to GutThe brain is an organ with a high energy requirement. To meet this demand, the brain needs a continuous and well-regulated blood supply. In situations where the brain, or parts of the brain, does not receive sufficient blood flow injury arise. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Pathogenetic mechanisms in irritable bowel syndrome

    Författare :Hans Törnblom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Irritable bowel syndrome; functional gastrointestinal disorder; immunohistochemistry; full-thickness biopsy; enteric nervous system; autoantibody; gastroenteritis; risk factor;

    Sammanfattning : Aims of the thesis: To study new pathogenetic mechanisms in IBS; to find out if IBS is a neuromuscular disease affecting the small bowel; to study humoral factors in gut dysmotility associated with visceral neuropathy; and to study the natural history of post-infectious gastro-intestinal (GI) symptoms and risk factors for their development. Material and methods: In studies I and II, full-thickness jejunum biopsies from patients with severe IBS were investigated with immunohistochemistry. LÄS MER
