  1. 16. Properties of Endothelium and its Importance in Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Författare :Åsa Johansson; Per-Ola Carlsson; JanOve Sehlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; islet transplantation; endothelial cells; engraftment; beta cells; Diabetology; Diabetologi; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Transplantation of insulin producing cells is currently the only cure for type 1 diabetes. However, even though the Edmonton protocol markedly increased the success rate of pancreatic islet transplantation, the long term insulin independence is still very poor. An adequate engraftment is critical for islet graft survival and function. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Roles of the Shb and Cbl Proteins in Signal Transduction and Blood Vessel Formation

    Författare :Lingge Lu; Michael Welsh; Lars Holgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Shb; Cbl; FGF-2; NGF; PDGF; VEGF; VEGFR-2; differentiation; blood vessel formation; PC12 cells; endothelial cells; embryoid bodies; Rap1; CrkII; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Formation of blood vessels occurs through two processes: vasculogenesis and angiogenesis, which are regulated by various growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor, fibroblast growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor. The present study was carried out in order to investigate the roles of the Shb and Cbl proteins in growth factor-mediated signal transduction and blood vessel formation. LÄS MER

  3. 18. From the pancreatic beta cell to the endothelium:Pathophysiological aspects of Type 2 Diabetes

    Författare :Marloes Dekker Nitert; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sekretion; diabetologi; diabetology; insulin secretion; beta cells; glucose tolerance; insulin receptors; IGF-I receptors; endothelial cells; Endokrinologi; Type 2 Diabetes; secreting systems; Endocrinology;

    Sammanfattning : The incidence of Diabetes Mellitus increases globally in epidemic proportions. Type 2 Diabetes is the most prevalent form of Diabetes, comprising 90% of the patients. In Type 2 Diabetes, two processes contribute to the development of the disease: insufficient insulin secretion from the pancreatic ?-cell and insulin resistance of the target organs. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain : Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity

    Författare :Anna Östergren; Eva Brittebo; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; Anne-Lie Svensson; Hans Tjälve; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; β-carboline; neuromelanin; norharman; harman; parkinsonism; Parkinson s disease; motoric impairment; behaviour; glia cells; substantia nigra; dopamine melanin; PC12 cells; ER stress; grp78; hsp90; cytochrome P450; CYP1A1; CYP1B1; blood-brain interfaces; 7; 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; endothelial cell; smooth muscle cell; bioactivation; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Innate immune response in human endothelial cells : characterization and regulation of E-selectin, ICAM-I and cytokine expression and the role of Staphylococcus aureus

    Författare :Jan Strindhall; Åsa Ljungh; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Endothelial cells located on the vessel walls play an important role in inflammation. In response to cytokines or other inflammatory mediators such as microorganisms, endothelial cells express cell adhesion molecules such as E-selectin and ICAM-1 that are involved in binding circulating leukocytes to the endothelium.
