1. Endosymbiosis of Frankia cluster-2
Sammanfattning : Actinobacteria of the genus Frankia engage in root endosymbiosis with actinorhizal plants belonging to the Fagales, Cucurbitales and Rosales. The genus Frankia consists of four different clades. Strains belonging to cluster-1, -2, and -3 exhibit host-specificity which plants they can nodulate, while cluster-4 strains do not engage in symbiosis. LÄS MER
2. Culture-independent methods and high-throughput sequencing applied to evolutionary microbial genomics
Sammanfattning : Culture-independent methods allow us to better understand the diversity of microorganisms on earth. By omitting the culturing step, we can gain access to species previously out of our reach. To better capture and understand the diversity of microorganisms, we have developed an alternative to 16S amplicon sequencing. 3. Exploration of microbial diversity and evolution through cultivation independent phylogenomics
Sammanfattning : Our understanding of microbial evolution is largely dependent on available genomic data of diverse organisms. Yet, genome-sequencing efforts have mostly ignored the diverse uncultivable majority in favor of cultivable and sociologically relevant organisms. LÄS MER
4. Expanding the Chlamydiae tree : Insights into genome diversity and evolution
Sammanfattning : Chlamydiae is a phylum of obligate intracellular bacteria. They have a conserved lifecycle and infect eukaryotic hosts, ranging from animals to amoeba. Chlamydiae includes pathogens, and is well-studied from a medical perspective. LÄS MER
5. Mitochondrial Evolution : Turning Bugs into Features
Sammanfattning : The bacterial origin of mitochondria from an ancient endosymbiosis is now widely accepted and the mitochondrial ancestor is generally believed to belong to the bacterial subdivision α-proteobacteria. The high fraction of mitochondrial proteins encoded in the nucleus has commonly been explained with a massive transfer of genes from the genome of the ancestral mitochondrion. LÄS MER
