  1. 1. Biodegradation of the Recalcitrant Endocrine Disruptor Nonylphenol

    Författare :Ana Soares; Bioteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biofilm bioreactors; Miljöteknik; pollution control; Environmental technology; Teknik; Technological sciences; white-rot fungi; nonylphenol ethoxylates; endocrine-disrupting activity; contaminated soil; cold-adapted organisms; kontroll av utsläpp; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; biodegradation;

    Sammanfattning : Currently, over 100 high-volume chemicals have been classified as endocrine disrupters. One of these is nonylphenol, which was used as the model compound in this study. This substance originates mainly from the degradation of non-ionic surfactants (nonylphenol ethoxylates) which are widely used in industrial and domestic applications. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Exposure and effects of naturally produced hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers in fish : Implications for Baltic Sea wildlife

    Författare :Johan Gustafsson; Lillemor Asplund; Pim E.G. Leonards; Marja H. Lamoree; Robert Letcher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecotoxicology; Metabolomics; OH-PBDE; Algae; Cyanobacteria; Natural products; Thiamine; Health; Biomarker; Seasonal variation; Perch; Zebrafish; Flame retardant; Mixture; 6-OH-BDE47; Energy metabolism; Endocrine disruption; Neurotoxicity; OXPHOS; Environmental Chemistry; miljökemi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate if naturally produced hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) are causing negative health effects for Baltic Sea wildlife. In the laboratory, OH-PBDEs have shown to be potent disrupters of energy metabolism as well as endocrine disruptors and neurotoxins. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Hypospadias : analysis of a complex genetic disorder

    Författare :Ana Maria Beleza Meireles; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND: Hypospadias is a common inborn error of the male urethra that involves an abnormally placed urethral opening. Its complex etiology is largely elusive to date. Twin and familial studies highlight a genetic background in hypospadias. Environmental factors have also been identified, particularly the exposure to endocrine disrupters. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Growth factors in spermatogenesis

    Författare :Aida Wahlgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Testis; seminiferous tubules; proliferation; growth factors; sex steroids;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this study was to increase the knowledge of die effects of locally produced growth factors and hormones on germ cell proliferation in rat testis in vitro. Since impaired sperm production and function accounts for half the cases of infertility, it is important to understand the physiological actions in germ cell development. LÄS MER
