16. Studies on bacterial transmission pathways in a high endemic area, with a focus on Helicobacter pylori
Sammanfattning : Even though half of the world’s population is infected with Helicobacter pylori, which causes gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, the transmission routes of these bacteria remain unknown despite extensive epidemiological studies. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Vibrio cholerae are two of the most common causes of acute watery diarrhea in developing countries. LÄS MER
17. Long-term molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Escherichia coli in a low-endemic setting
Sammanfattning : Escherichia coli is a commensal inhabitant in the gastro-intestinal tract of humans and animals but it is also the most common bacterial species causing urinary tract infection, which ranges in severity from distal cystitis to urosepsis and septic shock. During the past decades, the prevalence of antibiotic resistant E. LÄS MER
18. Leishmaniasis in Sweden. Molecular, diagnostic and epidemiological studies of the parasite Leishmania in a non-endemic country
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis consists of four separate papers, in which we; investigate epidemiological and clinical aspects of leishmaniasis in Sweden in order to increase awareness of the disease, elucidate some aspects of the interaction of the parasite and the human immune system and validate serological tools as a complement for diagnosis of leishmaniasis.. 19. The role of rodents in the transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis and other tapeworms in a low endemic area
Sammanfattning : Echinococcus multilocularis is zoonotic tapeworm in the Taeniidae family with a two part lifecycle involving a canid definitive host and a rodent intermediate host. The work of this thesis followed the first identification E. multilocularis in Sweden in 2011 in a red fox (Vulpes vulpes). LÄS MER
20. Development of AIDS associated and endemic Kaposi sarcoma : HHV-8/KSHV viral load in cutaneous and oral tumor cells
Sammanfattning : Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a highly and abnormally vascularized tumor-like lesion which usually presents as a cutaneous lesion and eventually progresses to systemic disease usually in the gastrointestinal (G1) tract, lungs, oral cavity and lymph nodes. Whether KS represents a predominantly monoclonal neoplastic cell proliferation or a hyperplastic, reactive polyclonal process is still controversial. LÄS MER
