11. Membranous Nephropathy - Challenges in diagnostics and treatment
Sammanfattning : The variability in the pathogenesis, clinical presentation and outcome of membranous nephropathy (MN) poses major clinical challenges and raises different questions, both regarding diagnostics and treatment of patients with MN. The aims of this thesis were therefore to examine: 1) differences in the glomerular expression of different IgG subclasses and phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) between patients with idiopathic and malignancy-associated MN; 2) treatment pattern of patients with idiopathic MN; and 3) if the serum PLA2R antibody level at diagnosis can be used as a prognostic marker. 12. Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Diabetes : Experimental Studies in the Rat
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the leading causes of end stage renal failure. An increased susceptibility to renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-injury was found in DM rats. Unilateral renal ischemia for as short as 20 minutes led to an irreversible progressive injury in DM kidneys, whereas the injury in non-DM kidneys was almost reversible. LÄS MER
13. Lupus Nephritis – Genetic Impact on Clinical Phenotypes, Disease Severity and Renal Outcome
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that can affect every organ system. Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the more serious SLE manifestations. Whilst the genetic background of SLE has been thoroughly investigated, less is known about the background of LN. LÄS MER
14. Epidemiological studies of childhood diabetes and important health complications to the disease
Sammanfattning : Background and aims: The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge regarding the occurrence of childhood onset T1D and T2D in Sweden and in relation to that describe and elucidate important aspects on two grave complications to diabetes; end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and mortality. The two first studies included in this thesis aimed to describe and analyze the cumulative incidence of childhood onset T1D in Sweden and to assess the occurrence of undetected T2D in Swedish children. 15. Hyperparathyroidism and parathyroidectomy in patients on renal replacement therapy
Sammanfattning : Background. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT) is characterized by over function of the parathyroid glands and disturbances in mineral metabolism as a result of renal failure. It is common among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and it often persists after successful renal transplantation. LÄS MER
