16. Small biotopes in agricultural landscapes: importance for vascular plants and effects of management
Sammanfattning : As a consequence of agricultural intensification, large areas of non-crop habitat have been lost and farmland biodiversity has declined. Previous studies have shown that the extent of non-crop habitat influences farmland biodiversity, but the relative importance of different habitat types is less well known and the contribution of small incidental habitats to landscape-scale species richness is not fully understood. 17. Optimizing processes for biological nitrogen removal in Nakivubo wetland, Uganda
Sammanfattning : The ability of Nakivubo wetland (which has performed tertiary water treatment for Kampala city for the past 40 years) to respond to pollution and to protect the water quality of Inner Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria was investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the capacity of Nakivubo wetland to remove nitrogen from the wastewater after its recent encroachment and modification, in order to optimize biological nitrogen removal processes using constructed wetland technology. 19. Impact of climate warming on Arctic plant diversity: phylogenetic diversity unravels opposing shrub responses in a warming tundra
Sammanfattning : The Arctic biome is at significant risk, with recent observations suggesting that climate change is warming the Arctic nearly four times faster than the global average. Last decade, evidence from experimental warming studies and observations of ambient warming over time shows how increasing air temperature in the Arctic has led to changes to arctic vegetation, and encroachment of trees and shrubs into the tundra.
