    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to examine how learner-general developmental stages in syntax and morphology interact with a language-specific factor, the influence of—or transfer from— the language learner’s first (L1) or previously learned second (L2) language on the acquisition of a third language (L3). It thereby aims to bring together two lines of research whose main concepts—transfer and developmental stages—have often been defined as mutually exclusive and generally studied in separate lines of research. In their production of regular verbs, beginners use a short form, like parle, and a long form, like parlE, in contexts of both the present (je parl/*je parlE) and the infinitive (je veux parlE/*je veux parl).     Sammanfattning : The present study reports three cases of LI Japanese loss and regaining (Shoko 3; 10, HI 5;5 and H2 7;0 at the time the subjects left Japan for non-Japanese environments) by two siblings (one of them was studied twice at two different times) who grew up as Japanese-English bilinguals from birth. It describes the lexical and syntactic changes of the language in details, discerns the nature of the loss, and investigates the relationship between attrition and age and pre-attrition proficiency.
