1. Extracellular electron transfer features of the Gram-positive bacterium Enterococcus faecalis
Sammanfattning : Electroactive microorganisms possess the unique ability to transfer electrons to or from a solid phase electron conductor, e.g., electrodes or minerals, through various physiological mechanisms. LÄS MER
2. Kinetics of proton and electron transfer in heme-copper oxidases
Sammanfattning : Heme-copper oxidases are transmembrane proteins that are found in aerobic and anaerobic respiratory chains. During aerobic respiration, these enzymes reduce dioxygen to water. The energy released in the reaction is used to transport protons across a biological membrane. LÄS MER
3. Theoretical studies of blue copper proteins
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, a critical investigation is presented about the role of mechanical strain for the electron-transfer properties of the blue copper proteins. It has been found that the structure of a realistic model complex of the oxidised blue-copper active site, optimised in vacuum with the B3LYP method, has the same trigonal cupric geometry as in the protein. 4. Structural Plasticity and Function in Cytochrome cd1 Nitrite Reductase
Sammanfattning : Cytochrome cd1 nitrite reductase is a bifunctional enzyme, which catalyses the one-electron reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide, and the four-electron reduction of oxygen to water. The latter is a cytochrome oxidase reaction. Both reactions occur on the d1 haem iron of the enzyme. LÄS MER
5. The Heterocysts of Nostoc punctiforme : From Proteomics to Energy Transfer
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to provide a thorough characterization of the photosynthetic machinery from the heterocysts of Nostoc punctiforme strain ATCC 29133. In this thesis I describe the protocols I have optimized for the isolation of thylakoids from vegetative cells, the purification of heterocysts and the isolation of thylakoids from the purified heterocysts.
