1. Accurate description of heterogeneous tumors for biologically optimized radiation therapy
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, a model of tissue oxygenation is presented, that takes into account the heterogeneous nature of tumor vasculature. Even though the model is rather simple, the resulting oxygen distributions agree very well with clinically observed oxygen distributions for most tumors and healthy normal tissues. LÄS MER
2. Modelling and Simulation of Thermal Radiation in Biomass Combustion
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents numerical investigations and simulations of fixed bed combustion of wood, models for predicting thermal radiative properties of particles and gases related to the combustion of wood, and a review of heat load calculations in gas turbines. All subjects have a common factor in thermal radiation. LÄS MER
3. Improved dose response modeling for normal tissue damage and therapy optimization
Sammanfattning : The present thesis is focused on the development and application of dose response models for radiation therapy. Radiobiological models of tissue response to radiation are an integral part of the radiotherapeutic process and a powerful tool to optimize tumor control and minimize damage to healthy tissues for use in clinical trials. 4. ESR dosimetry in the radiation therapy dose range : development of dosimetry systems and sensitive dosimeter materials
Sammanfattning : ESR dosimetry with L-α-alanine as a dosimeter material is a well known and frequently used method for measuring high absorbed doses, for example at sterilisation and food irradiation. The increased sensitivity of modem spectrometers and an increased knowledge of the radiochemical properties of alanine have lowered the detection limit of ESR/alanine dosimetry to the dose range relevant for radiation therapy. 5. CT Colonography: implementation and technical developments
Sammanfattning : Background: Computed tomographic colonography (CTC) is a minimally invasive imaging method for the detection of colorectal neoplasms. Uncertainty about its diagnostic performance, optimal visualization method, long learning curve and radiation exposure are among problems with CTC, affecting its implementation in routine health care.
