6. Hazard assessment of ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan for marine periphyton : Ecotoxicology, Pollution Induced Community Tolerance and Co-Tolerance
Sammanfattning : Antibiotics and personal care products are used in large quantities and commonly detected in various environmental compartments. The two antibiotics, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole, and the personal care product triclosan are among the most commonly detected compounds in sewage treatment plants and aquatic environments. 7. The use of protein biomarkers in ecotoxicology : Studies of oxidative and genotoxic stress in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)
Sammanfattning : Many environmental pollutants, heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) among them, are toxic by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress may be defined as a state in an organism when its inherent capacity to handle oxyradicals is surpassed, and it may result in peroxidation of lipids, and damage to proteins and DNA. 8. Exploring phenomena that affect the fate and impact of radioactive materials in the blue mussel
Sammanfattning : Current protection of the marine environment from radiation is based largely on measuring, estimating and modelling accumulation and impact(s) of radionuclides in a few marine species. Using a relevant marine organism, this thesis focusses on investigating some poorly described phenomena that could cause deviations from predicted measurements. LÄS MER
9. Micro-by-micro interactions : Aggregation dynamics, biofilms, and ecotoxicological impacts of suspended solids
Sammanfattning : Increasing concerns arise regarding the environmental risk of microplastics (MP) and their interactions with biota, prompting numerous effect studies. However, current ecotoxicology methods fall short when it comes to assessing MP impacts. LÄS MER
10. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective
Sammanfattning : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models.
