1. Simplifying complex models : Application of modeling tools in exposure assessment of organic pollutants
Sammanfattning : Thousands of chemicals are used in society, but the exposure to humans and other organisms has been measured only for a small number of compounds. Modeling tools constitute low-cost and effective alternatives to measurements for the assessment of exposure. LÄS MER
2. The Invasion of the Zebra Mussel - Effects on Phytoplankton Community Structure and Ecosystem Function
Sammanfattning : Biological invasion has become a major threat to economy, ecology, global biodiversity and ecosystem function of aquatic ecosystems. The main aim of the thesis was to study the effects of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), a versatile invasive species, on phytoplankton dynamics and ecosystem function of lakes. LÄS MER
3. Effect of Probiotics on Caries-related Variables
Sammanfattning : In relation to the caries disease, the aims of this thesis were to investigate the effect of probiotic drops on different caries-related variables in vivo (Papers I & III), on interference capability and genetic response to different metabolites in vitro (II) and systematically to review the best mode and dose of administration based on the examined oral outcomes (IV). The effects on colonisation and cariogenic bacteria were studied in plaque and saliva via plating and qPCR-analyses in teenagers and orthodontic patients after short-term exposure. LÄS MER
4. Single cell protein in fish feed: effects on gut microbiota
Sammanfattning : The microbiota has been shown to be important for nutrition and health. It provides the host with an extensive arsenal of dietary enzymes that can contribute to host metabolism by conversion of otherwise undigestible compounds to metabolites that the host can utilize. LÄS MER
5. Fungal assemblages in forest trees : influence of internal and external conditions
Sammanfattning : Forest trees host a plethora of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) whose roles and diversity are still poorly understood despite the increased scientific interest for the past decades. The thesis focuses on the diversity of endophytic and epiphytic fungi in the aerial tissues of broadleaved trees. LÄS MER
