  1. 1. Harvesting from land and sea : Social relationships, trade networks, and spatial connectivity in changing social-ecological systems

    Författare :Blanca González García-Mon; Maja Schlüter; Örjan Bodin; Emilie Lindkvist; Bonnie McCay; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; social-ecological systems; food; trade; networks; embeddedness; supply chain; diversification; mobility; fisheries; agriculture; mixed-methods; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling; Sustainability Science;

    Sammanfattning : In the era of global change, the connectivity of aquatic and terrestrial food production systems across spatial scales is increasing. At the same time, diverse actors that participate in food systems, from production to consumption, face the need to adapt their daily activities to an increasingly changing context. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Land use change constitutes a primary driving force in shaping social-ecological systems world wide, and its effects reach far beyond the directly impacted areas. Graph based landscape ecological tools have become established as a promising way to efficiently explore and analyze the complex, spatial systems dynamics of ecological networks in physical landscapes. 3. 3. Management Practices for Dealing with Uncertainty and Change : Social-Ecological Systems in Tanzania and Madagascar

    Författare :Maria Tengö; Thomas Elmqvist; Monica Hammer; Carl Folke; Kamaljit Bawa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resilience; ecosystem services; local ecological knowledge; traditional ecological knowledge; ecosystem management; agroecosystems; dry tropical forest; social institutions; forest regeneration; sacred forests; taboos; community conservation; Southern Madagascar; Androy; Iraqw; management practices; habitat loss; small reserves; human-dominated ecosystems; social-ecological systems; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The development of human societies rests on functioning ecosystems. This thesis builds on integrated theories of linked social-ecological systems and complex adaptive systems to increase the understanding of how to strengthen the capacity of ecosystems to generate services that sustain human well-being. 4. 4. Structure and Stability of Ecological Networks : The role of dynamic dimensionality and species variability in resource use

    Författare :David Gilljam; Bo Ebenman; Peter Münger; José Montoya; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The main focus of this thesis is on the response of ecological communities to environmental variability and species loss. My approach is theoretical; I use mathematical models of networks where species population dynamics are described by ordinary differential equations. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Of Mangroves and Middlemen : A study of social and ecological linkages in a coastal community

    Författare :Beatrice Crona; Patrik Rönnbäck; Nils Kautsky; Neil Adger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :mangroves; restoration; ecosystem goods and services; natural resource management; local ecological knowledge; social networks; social-ecological systems; East Africa; co-management; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis studies some of the links between the social and ecological components in a coastal Social-Ecological System (SES) of East Africa to gain insight into factors affecting natural resource management at a community level. It does so by assessing the return of ecosystem goods and services in restored mangroves through both ecological and socio-economic measurements, and by empirically studying variations and diversity in content of local ecological knowledge among resource users, its relation to valuation of ecosystem goods and services and its distribution across a social network.
