1. Early rheumatoid arthritis : biomarkers and hormonal factors in relation to disease progression
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease, affecting approximately 0.5 to 1% of the adult population. Although the aetiology is not fully known, a complex interaction between genetic, environmental and stochastic factors is thought to trigger the pathogenic mechanisms. LÄS MER
2. Predictors of disease onset and progression in early rheumatoid arthritis : A clinical, laboratory and radiological study
Sammanfattning : To diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA) during the early stages of the disease is often difficult. The disease course shows great inter-individual variation from mild, self-limiting to very severe destruc-tive disease with extra-articular manifestations. LÄS MER
3. Secretory Autoantibodies in Rheumatoid Arthritis
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease in which autoantibodies, such as anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), can be detected in the serum of patients. Autoantibodies may appear in the circulation years before clinical signs of joint inflammation occur, indicating that early immunological pathogenetic steps take place outside of the joints. LÄS MER
4. Comorbidities in early rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : All of the studies that form part of this thesis concern the subject of comorbid conditions in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We have used linkage of Swedish clinical and demographic registers as well as the Swedish Rheumatology Quality Register (SRQ) and the Epidemiological Investigation of RA (EIRA) study to investigate the prevalence of comorbidities in early RA, the influence of comorbidities on the choice of antirheumatic treatment and on the chance of remission. 5. Disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis : Studies in interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor alpha, monocyte activity, acute phase markers, glucocorticoids, and disability
Sammanfattning : In the present studies, aspects of some disease activity measures in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been investigated, including the effect of glucocorticoids on this activity. In RA, serum interleukin(IL)-6 levels were elevated and were shown to have a circadian rhythm, with peak levels in the morning, declining towards low or normal levels in the afternoon and evening.
