  1. 11. Analysis of deep brain stimulation and ablative lesions in surgical treatment of movement disorders : with emphasis on safety aspects

    Författare :Patric Blomstedt; Bengt Linderoth; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; deep brain stimulation; pallidotomy; thalamotomy; complications; Parkinson s disease; essential tremor; Clinical Neurophysiology; klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Background The last decade has witnessed a renaissance of functional stereotactic neurosurgery in the treatment of patients with movement disorders, especially advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor (ET) and dystonia. Ablative lesions such as thalamotomy and pallidotomy have been gradually replaced by the technique of chronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) applied to targets in the basal ganglia and thalamus, and assumed to be more lenient to the brain than stereotactic radiofrequency lesions. 2. 12. Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor Outcome and experiences from patients' and spouses' perspectives

    Författare :Anna Lena Törnqvist; Neurokirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; goal attainment; speech; social life; spouses; Neurologi; neurophysiology; Neurology; Parkinson s disease; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Deep Brain Stimulation; essential tremor; neuropsychology;

    Sammanfattning : The treatment related effects and personalized goal fulfilment of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) have been assessed in studies with different designs. The brain targets included the thalamus for medically intractable tremor in Parkinson's disease (PD) or essential tremor (ET) and the subthalamicus for reducing hypo-, bradykinesia, tremor, rigidity and dystonia in PD. 3. 13. Idiopathic scoliosis : radiographic, neurophysiologic and psychologic aspects

    Författare :Yngvi Ólafsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :idiopathic scoliosis; brace treatment; back surface analysis; self-image; somatosensory testing;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study brace treatment outcome, the brace effect on electromyographic muscle responses and self image, possible occurrence of somatosensory dysfunction and the descriptive power of surface topography contra radiography, in idiopathic scoliosis. There were 64 patients in a retrospective 4. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Genotype-phenotype characterization of familial hyperkinetic movement disorders : emphasis on ataxia and brain calcifications

    Författare :Martin Paucar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Differential diagnosis of familial chorea encompasses Huntington’s disease along with a group of conditions referred to as Huntington’s disease-like (HDL). One such HDL is an inherited prion disorder (IPD) caused by pathological insertions of 8 additional OPRIS in the prion protein gene (PRNP). LÄS MER

  5. 15. Role of Bone Morphogenetic Proteins for Catecholaminergic Neurons in Vivo : Use of the Tyrosine Hydroxylase Locus for Cell-Specific inactivation of Signal Transduction

    Författare :Dmitry Usoskin; Ted Ebendal; Ernest Arenas; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Tyrosine Hydroxylase; Bone Morphogenetic Proteins BMP ; Transforming Growth Factor-β TGF-β ; tissue-specific knockout; Parkinson s disease; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Members of the Transforming Growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily and its subclass Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMP) play important roles for nervous system development. In order to study the BMP role for catecholaminergic neurons in vivo, we generated three knock-in mice, expressing the transgenes specifically in the targeting cells. LÄS MER
