  1. 6. Swallowing Dysfunction in Respiratory Diseases : Prevalence and risk factors in COPD and COVID-19

    Författare :Margareta Gonzalez Lindh; Hirsh Koyi; Margareta Jennische; Monica Blom Johansson; Bonnie Martin-Harris; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :swallowing dysfunction; dysphagia; COPD; dyspnoea; COVID-19; invasive mechanical ventilation; Rehabilitation Medicine; Rehabiliteringsmedicin; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; Oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Sammanfattning : Objective: Swallowing dysfunction, dysphagia, is a common, sometimes dangerous, and often neglected problem that affects many people. The prevalence is estimated to be approximately 8% in the general population which makes it as common as e.g. diabetes or asthma. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Exploring the role of rheology in bolus flow using an in-vitro approach

    Författare :Muhammad Waqas; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; extensional rheology; ultrasound viscometery; Bolus rheology; in vivo analysis; in vitro manometry; In-vitro simulations; degluitition; microstructure analysis; thickened fluids; Dysphagia;

    Sammanfattning : Swallowing disorders, termed ‘dysphagia’, are more common in the elderly but can also affect younger persons. Approximately, 8% of the world’s population suffers from dysphagia. A Texture Modified Diet (TMD), which increases bolus viscosity to adjust for the sluggish bolus handling mechanism, is the most common intervention. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Eating difficulties in elderly, focusing on patients with stroke

    Författare :Albert Westergren; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; discharge; length of in-hospital stay; malnutrition; energy; alertness; ingestion; deglutition; dysphagia; eating; elderly care; rehabilitation; Nursing care; stroke; Gerontology; Gerontologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to describe eating difficulties and interventions to improve eating among elderly patients, especially those with stroke, to make comparisons between patients with dysphagia and those without (Papers I & II), those with and without assisted eating (Paper IV), and to analyse the relation between eating difficulties, nutritional status (Papers II-V), pressure ulcers (Paper IV), length of hospital stay and levels of independent living when discharged (Paper V). Eating difficulties were mainly assessed using structured observations. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Aspects on the management of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis

    Författare :Helen Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; eosinophilia; esophagitis; dysphagia; quality of life; bolus impaction;

    Sammanfattning : Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an inflammatory disorder of the esophagus characterized by symptoms of esophageal dysfunction and eosinophilia in the esophageal mucosa. This condition may affect approximately 1% of the general population and is strongly associated with allergy/atopic diatheses. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Towards improved oncological treatment of esophageal and gastric cancer. Clinical and translational studies

    Författare :David Borg; Tumörmikromiljö; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Esophageal adenocarcinoma; Gastric cancer; PODXL; Prognosis; Prediction; Chemotherapy dose intensity; Dysphagia; Radiotherapy;

    Sammanfattning : BackgroundThe overall aim of this thesis was to improve the oncological treatment strategies in esophageal and gastric adenocarcinoma (EGAC). Podocalyxin-like protein 1 (PODXL) has been associated with poor prognosis in other cancers and we wanted to investigate its potential role as a prognostic and predictive biomarker in resectable EGAC.
