1. Hepatitis B virus RNA in serum and liver tissue - quantification using digital PCR
Sammanfattning : Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global health issue that is responsible for approximately 900,000 deaths each year, by inducing liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A few markers are used to classify HBV infection and monitor treatment efficacy, including HBV DNA, surface antigen (HBsAg) and e antigen (HBeAg) in serum as well as HBV DNA and RNA in liver tissue. 2. Quantitative detection of bacterial DNA in whole blood in bloodstream infection
Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to increase the knowledge on how quantitative PCR can be used in the diagnostics of bloodstream infections, with an emphasis on quantitative elements. In Papers I and II, we evaluated quantitative data from two commercial PCR tests for pathogen detection directly in blood, Magicplex Sepsis (I) and SeptiFast (II), from patients with suspected sepsis. 3. Improved methodologies for molecular detection and quantification of viruses in food
Sammanfattning : Foodborne viruses such as norovirus, hepatitis A virus and hepatitis E virus cause a high burden of disease worldwide. Reverse transcription (RT) quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) is the current standard method for monitoring viral contamination in the food chain. LÄS MER
4. Molecular mechanism of plasmid copy number control in Yersinia
Sammanfattning : The ability of pathogenic bacteria to cause disease depends on various virulence mechanisms. The three pathogenic species of Yersinia use a type III secretion system (T3SS) to translocate effector proteins into host cells and disrupt the immune system. This T3SS is encoded on a 70kb, low-copy, virulence plasmid. LÄS MER
5. The human pancreatic polypeptide receptor Y4 : Genetic and functional variation
Sammanfattning : Humans are evolutionarily adapted to an environment where food is scarce, but today many live in a world of food abundance. Paired with low physical activity, this may lead to weight gain and obesity. Efficient anti-obesity treatments require understanding of the mechanisms that control hunger, satiety, energy metabolism and body weight. LÄS MER
