11. Topological excitations in field theory models of superconductivity and magnetism
Sammanfattning : Topological excitations are subjects of intensive studies in physics and mathematics. In solid-state and soft matter physics, topological excitations can largely determine the thermodynamic and electromagnetic properties of materials, while in high energy physics they were theorized as particles. 12. Form and function of complex networks
Sammanfattning : Networks are all around us, all the time. From the biochemistry of our cells to the web of friendships across the planet. From the circuitry of modern electronics to chains of historical events. A network is the result of the forces that shaped it. LÄS MER
13. Nonlinear interaction and propagation of gravitational and electromagnetic waves in plasmas
Sammanfattning : Gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves are important as carriers of energy and information. This thesis is devoted to the study of the propagation and interaction of these waves in plasmas, with emphasis on nonlinear effects and applications within astrophysics. LÄS MER
14. Making Maps and Keeping Logs : Quantum Gravity from Classical Viewpoints
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores three different aspects of quantum gravity. First we study D3-brane black holes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIB string theory. Using the OSV conjecture and a relation between topological strings and matrix models we show that some black holes have a matrix model description. LÄS MER
15. Pierced, Wrapped and Torn : Aspects of String Theory Compactifications
Sammanfattning : An outstanding problem in physics is to find a unified framework for quantum mechanics and general relativity. This is required for a better understanding of black holes and the early cosmology of the universe. String theory provides such a unification. In this thesis, we study aspects of compactifications of type IIB string theory. LÄS MER
