1. Growth and Behaviour : Epigenetic and Genetic Factors Involved in Hybrid Dysgenesis
Sammanfattning : In mammals, the most frequently observed hybrid dysgenesis effects are growth disturbances and male sterility. Profound defects in placental development have been described and our work on hybrids in genus Mus has demonstrated putative hybrid dysgenesis effects that lead to defects in lipid homeostasis and maternal behavior. 2. Genetic Analysis of Quantitative Traits Using Domestic Animals : A Candidate Gene and Genome Scanning Approach
Sammanfattning : Domestication has led to genetic changes that affect quantitative traits in farm animals. Both candidate gene analysis using association tests and genome scans based on linkage analysis have been performed to understand the molecular basis underlying quantitative genetic variation in horses, pigs and chickens. 4. Transcription regulation and growth phase transition in hyperthermoacidophilic archaea
Sammanfattning : Organisms from the domain Archaea are ubiquitously represented on our planet and encompass diverse fascinating organisms. The genus Sulfolobus belonging to the phylum Crenarchaeota including hyperthermoacidophilic strains that grow optimally at 65-85°C and pH 2-3. LÄS MER
5. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants.
