  1. 1. Trophic complexity of zooplankton–cyanobacteria interactions in the Baltic Sea : Insights from molecular diet analysis

    Författare :Nisha H. Motwani; Elena Gorokhova; Jakob Walve; Catherine Legrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bloom-forming filamentous cyanobacteria; diazotrophs; picocyanobacteria; zooplankton; grazing; molecular diet analysis; stable isotopes; biochemical indices; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Blooms of nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) occur in many freshwater and marine systems, including the Baltic Sea. By fixing dissolved nitrogen, they circumvent general summer nitrogen limitation, while also generating a supply of novel bioavailable nitrogen for non-diazotrophic primary producers and ultimately supporting secondary production. 2. 2. Prehistoric diet transitions : an archaeological perspective

    Författare :Kerstin Lidén; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES;

    Sammanfattning : This is a study of prehistoric diet transitions within the Baltic area during the Stone Age. More specific the changes in diet expected to be found when hunter-gatherer subsistence is changed into a farming subsistence. This transition should be able to detect in the bone material as changes in trace element amounts and changes in stable isotopes. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Multi-platform metabolomics assays to study the responsiveness of the human plasma and lung lavage metabolome

    Författare :Masoumeh Karimpour; Malin Nording L.; Magnus Åberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LC MS; GC MS; NMR; metabolomics; metabolite; exposure; postprandial; plasma; lung lavage; BW; BW; data analysis; univariate analysis; multivariate analysis;

    Sammanfattning : Metabolomics as a field has been used to track changes and perturbations in the human body by investigating metabolite profiles indicating the change of metabolite levels over time and in response to different challenges. In this thesis work, the main focus was on applying multiplatform-metabolomics to study the human metabolome following exposure to perturbations, such as diet (in the form of a challenge meal) and exhaust emissions (air pollution exposure in a controlled setting). 4. 4. Methods for the analysis and characterization of brain morphology from MRI images

    Författare :Irene Brusini; Chunliang Wang; Örjan Smedby; Eric Westman; Lars-Olof Wahlund; Jorge Cardoso; KTH; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brain MRI; Image Segmentation; Machine Learning; Deep Learning; Shape Analysis; Aging; Neurodegeneration; MRT av hjärnan; Bildsegmentering; Maskininlärning; Djupinlärning; Formanalys; Åldrande; Neurodegeneration; Medical Technology; Medicinsk teknologi;

    Sammanfattning : Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging modality that produces detailed images of the brain without using any ionizing radiation. From a structural MRI scan, it is possible to extract morphological properties of different brain regions, such as their volume and shape. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Assessment of dietary patterns and prey consumption of marine mammals: Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Karl Lundström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; grey seal; Halichoerus grypus; Baltic Sea; diet; predation; fish; consumption; fatty acid signature analysis; bioenergetics; foraging ecology;

    Sammanfattning : The Baltic Sea has been severely affected by pollution and resource overexploitation during the last centuries. The grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) is a good example of how a species can be affected by such changes. LÄS MER
