6. Studies of EHEC and the complement system in renal diseases
Sammanfattning : This thesis addressed the diagnosis, pathogenesis and clinical course of specific renal diseases hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and dense deposit disease (DDD). HUS may be associated with infection caused by Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) or with complement dysfunction due to complement mutations or auto-antibodies (atypical HUS, aHUS). LÄS MER
7. Collagenous colitis. Epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation and associated autoimmune disorders
Sammanfattning : Collagenous colitis (CC) affects middle-aged women and results in chronic watery non-bloody diarrhoea. The incidence of CC has increased but has never been determined in southern Sweden. During the period 2001-2010 the mean annual incidence was stable; 5.4/105 (median age 71 years). LÄS MER
8. Faecal Calprotectin Diagnostics : Focus on Primary Care and Suspected Sources of Error
Sammanfattning : Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms often present a diagnostic challenge for general practitioners. Faecal calprotectin (FC) is commonly used as a marker of intestinal inflammation and is useful for differentiating between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as for the follow-up of patients with IBD and monitoring treatment response. 9. Characterisation of Food Associated Bacteria by DNA based Methods, with Special Reference to Enterobacteriaceae
Sammanfattning : The presence of genes in food, encoding some virulence factors, was studied by PCR, and species of Enterobacteriaceae, associated with food, were studied by the DNA-based methods of TTGE, ribotyping and sequencing. The flora of fresh and chill-stored pork were analysed by a culture-independent approach, using specific amplification of 16S rRNA genes followed by cloning and sequencing. LÄS MER
10. Dendritic cell interactions with Gram negative bacteria
Sammanfattning : The interaction between murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DC) and the Gram negative bacteria Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli have been characterised. These studies showed that DC phagocytosed and processed S. typhimurium and E. LÄS MER
