1. Clinical, Genetic and Metabolic Characterisation of LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults)
Sammanfattning : Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) comprises about 10% of patients initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but who are positive for pancreatic islet antibodies, especially to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADabs). The present studies focused on clinical, genetic and metabolic characterisation of patients with LADA. LÄS MER
2. Genetic interaction between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : There are two major types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Similarly characterized by hyperglycaemia and long term micro- and macrovascular complications, type 1 and type 2 diabetes have different underlying pathophysiologic processes. In Scandinavia, type 1 diabetes is common; type 2 diabetes accounts for 85% of all cases with diabetes. LÄS MER
3. Genetics of diabetic subtypes
Sammanfattning : There are two major types of diabetes mellitus, Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), however a number of subtypes have been defined and classified. Maternally Inherited Diabetes and Deafness (MIDD) and Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) are monogenic forms, whereas Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) is thought to be a polygenic subtype similar to T1D. 4. Diabetes Mellitus at the Time for Diagnosis : Studies on Prognostic Factors
Sammanfattning : The aim for this thesis was to identify prognostic factors for chronic diabetes complications that exist at the time of diabetes diagnosis.Low level of education (... LÄS MER
5. Exploring the Grey Zone between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Sammanfattning : T1D is most common in children and young adults and is characterized by autoimmune destruction of insulin producing pancreatic beta cells, presence of certain risk genotypes such as HLA-DQB1, INS VNTR, PTPN22 and need of insulin for survival. In adults the same situation is often referred to as Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), with age at onset after 35 years and non-insulin requiring at least for 6 month after diagnosis.
